MTV Video Music Awards 2012 Winner Predictions   Leave a comment

MTV’s biggest night of the year happens tomorrow when the Video Music Awards happen live tomorrow at the Staples Center in Loas Angeles. This year, Kevin Hart hosts the show, and we’ll see if this year will bring any memorable moment that will join the ranks of Fiona Apple’s Best New Artist speech in 1997, the threesome between Madonna, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera in 2003, and Lady Gaga’s bloody performance of Paparazzi in 2009.

As for the predictions, here are my thoughts on who will go home with the moonman tomorrow on the 10 main categories along with the six professional ones.

* Drake featuring Rihanna, “Take Care”
* Gotye featuring Kimbra, “Somebody That I Used to Know”
* Katy Perry, “Wide Awake”
* M.I.A., “Bad Girls”
* Rihanna, “We Found Love”

Who Will Win: There’s no perceived frontrunner in the same manner past years have, so this one’s kinda tricky. I don’t see them giving a second win to past VOTY winners Katy Perry (2011, Firework) or Rihanna (2007, Umbrella). M.I.A seems to fit the bill of the hip music video that they throw a bone to every year but really has no chance of winning. Drake’s video does not scream VOTY, though I’m happy he got the nod here. I guess with no choice left, I’m going with Gotye whose video deserves a win and made one of the catchiest song of the summer.

Dark Horse: Drake featuring Rihanna, “Take Care”
Who Should Win: Rihanna, “We Found Love”. I really like the maturity that she showed in this video, and it’s my choice in this line up.

* Justin Bieber, “Boyfriend”
* Chris Brown, “Turn Up the Music”
* Drake featuring Rihanna, “Take Care”
* Frank Ocean, “Swim Good”
* Usher, “Climax”

Who Will Win: With this being fan voted, there’s no stopping Bieber for that consecutive win.
Dark Horse: Frank Ocean, “Swim Good”. It’s a good and interesting video, and if they might want to go the indie route, Ocean might win this one since his buzz is surging.
Who Should Win: Frank Ocean, “Swim Good”

* Beyonce, “Love on Top”
* Katy Perry, “Part of Me”
* Nicki Minaj, “Starships”
* Rihanna, “We Found Love”
* Selena Gomez & The Scene, “Love You Like a Love Song”

Who Will Win: This one’s more tricky, but since they might want this to end ala prom night, they’d give Male and Female honors to Bieber and Selena Gomez. After all, it’s fan voted. So I’d say Selena squeaks out a win.
Dark Horse: Both Katy Perry (0 for 5) and Rihanna (0 for 2) are still winless in this category, but I’d give the edge over to Perry. % consecutive losses might sting already eh?
Who Should Win: Since this is her sole nomination, I’d be excited to see Selena win this one. I love her video, and it was actually a good one when you look at the technical aspects of it.

* fun featuring Janelle Monae, “We Are Young”
* Carly Rae Jepsen, “Call Me Maybe”
* Frank Ocean, “Swim Good”
* One Direction, “What Makes You Beautiful”
* The Wanted, “Glad You Came”

Who Will Win: One Direction. Nuff said. Do you see how they’re slaying the votes? That’s like Bieber times five.
Dark Horse: Carly Rae Jepsen. This is definitely the song of the summer, and Call Me Maybe has already hit pop culture phenomenon.
Who Should Win: I’d say fun wins this by a hair over Frank Ocean, and yes, One Direction. Where’s Gotye by the way?

* Justin Bieber, “Boyfriend”
* fun featuring Janelle Monae, “We Are Young”
* Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa, “Payphone”
* One Direction, “What Makes You Beautiful”
* Rihanna, “We Found Love”

Who Will Win: I’d say Bieber in a heartbeat, but like what I said, One Direction is Bieber times five, so I’d give the edge to these Brit guys.
Dark Horse: Justin Bieber.In case Directioners focused on New Artist and Shareworthy award, both the Biebs and 1D can have 2 awards at the end of the night.
Who Should Win: Rihanna. I love the video THAT much.

* The Black Keys, “Lonely Boy”
* Coldplay, “Paradise”
* Imagine Dragons, “It’s Time”
* Linkin Park, “Burn it Down”
* Jack White, “Sixteen Saltlines”

Who Will Win: No idea who’ll actually win here, so I’m going with Coldplay here.
Dark Horse: Linkin Park has been a VMA favorite for so many years despite not surpassing the In the End era. They can still pull off a win.
Who Should Win: Coldplay. I’m always a fan of their videos, and Paradise is no exception.

* Childish Gambino, “Heartbeat”
* Drake featuring Lil Wayne, “HYFR”
* Jay Z, Kanye West, “Paris”
* Nicki Minaj, 2 Painz, “Beez in the Trap”
* Kanye West, Pusha T, Big Sean, 2 Chainz, “Mercy”

Who Will Win: Drake, Lil Wayne. They might give Drake a bone for being one of the top nominees this year, It will also be a one two punch by giving Lil Wayne a moonman too.
Dark Horse: If only both Jay Z and Kanye were confirmed to be of attendance, I’ll predict this in a heartbeat. However, I still think it can win.
Who Should Win: Just the idea of Jay and Kanye collaborating is already worthy of a moonman.

* Kelly Clarkson, “Dark Side”
* Gym Class Heroes, Ryan Tedder, “The Fighter”
* K’naan, Nelly Furtado, “Is Anybody Out There?”
* Lil Wayne, “How to Love”
* Demi Lovato, “Skyscraper”
* Rise Against, “Ballad of Hollis Brown”

Who Will Win: Between her X Factor stint, comeback story, and personal struggles, I think this will be a possible walk away win for Demi Lovato.
Dark Horse: Lil Wayne. There’s no other viable strong contender here, so they might give him the moonman here.
Who Should Win: Kelly Clarkson’s Dark Side just because I like this era of her.

* Beyonce, “Countdown”
* Carly Rae Jepsen, “Call Me Maybe”
* Gotye featuring Kimbra, “Somebody That I Used to Know”
* Justin Bieber, “Boyfriend”
* One Direction, “What Makes You Beautiful”

Who Will Win: The results of this category is visible to the public, and One Direction leads Bieber by near a million.
Dark Horse: Bieber. In case each Belieber multiplied their voting power by ten, they’re still in the game.
Who Should Win: No idea. What is this category even for? But I vote One Direction just because they’re real guilty pleasure.

* Avicii, “Levels”
* Duck Sauce, “Big Bad Wolf”
* Calvin Harris, “Feels So Close”
* Skrillex, “First of the Year”
* Martin Solvieg, “The Night Out”

Who Will Win: Calvin Harris. Between this and We Found Love, they might give one shot to Harris’ own music career.
Dark Horse: Skrillex might gain some momentum for the EDM format.
Who Should Win: I thought David Guetta will get an instant win here, but he’s not even nominated.

Who are your choices for the win? Are you excited about the VMAs tomorrow?
