  1. After all the awards have been handed out last night, your personal pick for Best Film “Sundalong Kanin” for New Breed did not win. Such an outstanding film that was obviously snubbed by the Cinemalaya jury (because it’s a period film?) but so well loved by the audience and most critics…so disappointing to see those 4 boys unrecognized for the great acting they delivered throughout the film. They should have been awarded the “Best Ensemble Cast” because they rightfully deserve it.

    • It is indeed heartbreaking that Sundalong Kanin ended up winning nothing except the Audience Choice Award which the jury doesn’t have a say with. I guess it did not click with the jury for reasons we don’t know, and while it’s indeed disappointing, I hope it will fare better with critics and at year end lists. You really can’t have them all I assume.

I would have loved to see it win Ensemble as well, but let’s not take away the spotlight from the #Y ensemble which was equally deserving and an inspired pick as well. 🙂

  2. So happy you loved Asan si Lolo Me 🙂

  3. I liked Sundalong Kanin but it had a lot of excesses in directing and acting. It seemed that everyone had quota on the number of times each character would end up wailing in anguish. The choice to make the rebel leader a comic relief character undermined the tone of the entire film. I couldn’t take it seriously after that. The kids’ performances were general okay but some seemed like they were reading from a teleprompter (i.e. girlfriend who was raped). Best to view it as a TV movie with a lot of heart and a lot of promise.

  4. Ronda remains my favorite 🙂 Children’s Show and Mariquina were fine. I felt cold for Dagitab.
